I'll reply to you both after a bit here, I just wanted to send through 
here my results on first attempt at this...

a) No folder chmodding at all, I purposely downloaded Contact Form 7 
version "1.6" knowing there was a later version for it. Immediately was 
shown there was an update available. (This without activating the plugin 
too.)

b) Clicked the "update automatically" link.

c) Filled in the fields for the FTP informations...

d) Hit the button, then got this message

"Downloading update from 
http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/contact-form-7.1.7.6.zip

Unpacking the update

Removing the old version of the plugin

Could not remove the old plugin"

Again, the ABOVE was WITHOUT any folder Chmodding first!

Okay, then tried same method as above, but with Chmodding the ROOT 
folder, wp-content, plugins, the actual plugin folder itself for 
contact-form-7 .... chmodded them all 777, hit the button.... And got 
the SAME message too.

Unpacking the update

Removing the old version of the plugin

Could not remove the old plugin"

The above two attempts were using the SSL option. Tried once with the 
folders 777, without SSL option and still same thing. "Could not remove 
the old plugin" message.
