stats.WordPress (was Re: [wp-hackers] TinyMCE 3.0 RC-1)

That's pretty much what I as thinking. I imagine something like a
tracking pixel similar to google analytics' urchin but with a smaller
apparant code footprint, configurable in terms of what it broadcasts and
how often. e.g. admin data only || front-end stats only || both. Me
thinks if it offered some real value, e.g. link juice, relevant traffic
or usefull stats/analytics many if not most users would go for it. Those
who want to be the www's best kept secrets can stay that way. The main
challenge I see is scaling and capacity.

Plugin download stats for example only tells you how many downloads but
a download isn't an indication of whether the plugin was ever actually
installed or is in use for that matter. (if a plugin throws a fatal
error on each and every install, maybe the author and potential users
could be notified - can't be hard for an automated process to provide
more usefull information than the typical 'your plugin broke my blog,
what must i do!?' email :-)

More insteresting, how many businesses use WordPress? (I'd vote for a
human && computer / user && adminestrator approach to organizing the
information:-) How many wordpress installs are in various languages,
should we be paying more attention to e.g. Chinese and other asian,
Arabic etc. languages and their issues?

Just my 20c in small change

Probably by a hash of the blog URL(To prevent people complaining of a central directory of known functions/plugins running on any blog, as it can supposably increase the risk of installs if its known(Ref: The tinfoil brigade, on the Plugin version checking))

A central directory wouldnt increase the risk dramatically(IMO), and allthough security would be pretty good i assume, Some people just do not want information about them or products they use stored anywhere at all, So its all of personal opinion, Not something anyone needs to be argued about right now, Leave that to whoever designs it if it ever happens)
