[wp-hackers] Update without upgrading database?

Hi all --

So, if I update WordPress manually, the database doesn't actually get  
updated until the first time I go into the admin section.

What would happen if I didn't go into admin right away?  If I upgraded  
the WP files, but didn't go into admin for a week, would that cause  
big problems, or is the system able to cope with the "old" database  
until the update script is run?
