and on a more to the point tone:

I intend to add rss stats to FireStats in one of the next versions,
anyway - this is what I know so far:

1. some rss agregattors sends the number of subscribers in the user agent.

2. you need to somehow identify a distinct reader, probably by a
combination of ip and useragent.

3. when trying to figure out the number of readers, look for said
distinct readers within a certain time window. at least 24 hours, but I
think even a few days (5-7 days?)
