Sorry, no, I don't agree really that most hosts have real reasons for
not running PHP5. Not after three years. It's a better version with
support for any issues it may have.
Most hosts see shared hosting as a cash cow and are so calcified in
their outlook that they are unwilling to invest the reasonable amount of
time and energy in order to support it. I have come to this conclusion
after talking to lots of hosting companies in the Vancouver area. Some
want to be competitive and quality, most want to just make money and
offer as little service as possible because they don't want to work for
the money they earn. 
Shared hosting is seen as bottom basement service too often. The
industry needs a cattle prod to get out of this attitude.

PS, PHP6 is coming as well, with full Unicode support.

Most hosts have real reasons for not running PHP5, varying from bugs,  
to security holes (there are some security holes in PHP5 that the  
devs refuse to accept exist).
