I'd opt for x.y branching, e.g. a 1.5 branch. I'm thinking a new branch when 
DB layout changes or other things break compat with previous versions (which 
is OK for x.y versions bumps but, IMHO, not x.y.z bumps.)

BTW: How does the 1.5.1.x tags get... uhm... tagged now?
