If alpha-do-not-use testers ask for help in the forums, shouldn't they
be politely but firmly direct to the proper venue?

It's counterproductive to help people in a forum where you've told
them *not* to ask for help. You don't stop your puppy from begging at
the table by feeding him there, even if he doesn't don't read warnings
and feels he has some sort of entitlement to table scraps, regardless
of any admonishment elsewhere.

As I understand it, people can't even get the alpha-do-not-use version
without either signing up for the list or installing and learning to
use an SVN client, so it's pretty hard to see how an naive user could
stumble on to it accidently.

For that matter, wouldn't it simplify support to insist that everyone
install the latest stable release before they ask for help?
