 In either case, that's an issue for Chassis rather than for WP-API if
 you're having problems with that.

 That said, the WP-API plugin doesn't actually do anything with the theme
 that I'm aware of, and doesn't even need one to work properly. What is the
 error/problem you're running into specifically?
