[wp-forums] Non-support of K2

A fairly freqent statement in the forums is 'we do not support K2
because it is a modification of WP and not just a theme'. I have no
desire to deal with K2, but in what way  is it more than a theme? From
what I can see it is a download, unzip and drop in the themes folder -
no changes to core files etc. Also, does the same thinking apply to
other 'advanced' themes such as Squibble and (possibly) Hemmingway
too?
