<div dir="ltr">Custom post types are considered "Plugin Territory", though special-case Themes can be considered on a case-by-case basis.<div><br></div><div style>The appropriateness of post custom meta depends on the nature of the metadata. For example, metadata to define a per-post layout would be fine, but metadata for "current mood", etc. would be Plugin Territory.</div>

No, recommended, not required.<br><br>Overall (not directing this at you), this continues to be a big issue with theme reviewers overstepping their bounds in reviews by listing things as implied required without explicitly defining that certain things are <i>only</i> recommended.<br>
<br>It's well overdo for admins to crack down on this. Most reviewers do this, it's not an isolated issue.<br>
