I think a regular user would go looking for the Recent Posts widget and see that its missing and decide that it was impossible to show recent posts in a widget.</div>

Not necessarily. The functionality is what's important. For
example, one single widget might cover both the WordPress archives
and recent posts widget. It just depends on the particular
widget(s). In general though, yes, you'd need to replace any widget
