In order to work with tools like awk ( and to follow what core is doing in trunk and will be doing in 3.5 and beyond -<a href="http://core.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/21592">http://core.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/21592</a>), I would encourage you to do style.css as your regular version and style.min.css as the compressed version. That will also eliminate your problem of having to re-add the header.<div>

Thanks for the response and feedback.<div><br></div><div>I plan to use YUI which is widely used - and available for different platforms. You can find GUI versions of it, or command line versions to use in scripts. Only sort of glitch is that for style.css, one has to manually re-add the standard header so it still works, but that is easy enough to do.</div>

It would also be a good idea to mention exactly what minifier you used<br>
and any parameters necessary in the readme.txt. This is so that others<br>
can minify it themselves for comparison, or make changes to the dev<br>
version and re-minify, etc.<br>
