[theme-reviewers] Are there any rules against usage of PHP's session variables?

I am reviewing a theme which uses PHP Session ID/Variables. It is being used to edit the theme from the front end, using ajax. I Couldn't find any way in which it harms the theme/user.
Still, Are themes allowed to use Session Variables, or set Cookies?
