[theme-reviewers] Help on theme review - Did I waste my time?

Right, however your .xml file backup would still retain the information necessary and that when people utililze your theme they know it has special custom post type menu's in it and I think generally the end user knows the difference.

Maybe a blurb in the readme.txt about it might be all that is needed concerning switching themes that those post types data will not be present.

Also it's been more then 6 months that i've been sick and gone, whatever happened to asking otto to implement the readme like plugins do? Specialized instructions to special themes would benefit from having the information available there a-long with a tag.

Regardless, at *THIS* time declining a theme for its specialized post type shouldn't happen since it's not a rule or guideline. Then what about those others that are in the repo that already contain these? And there ARE some that are there already.

  Phil,
I think the main issue here is simply that if someone had a blog utilizing something like the twenty-ten theme then they should be able to change to any theme in the repo and only the styling (not the content) would be affected. I know with the specialized themes I have done there is no longer the idea of a Post because custom post types have replaced them. If they switched from the twenty-ten theme to my theme they would find that what they were expecting to see would no longer exist.

Correct me if I'm wrong theme-reviewers but I think the major issue is not that there are specialized themes but more that Repo is really made for themes that follow a pre-3.1 type of WP model and should be interchangeable. I would imagine soon we will have a few theme repos including one for specialized themes (at least I hope so).

For now it seems that those of us with GPL specialized themes will have to wait it out.

Why should they be treated any differently? it's just post types and post types already pass the process. Are you going to stop themes that have the new post elements? those handle content creation as well. It's just another level, that is all.

Is it because the theme team doesn't know how to test them? Does it do anything to circumvent security? What "is" is specifically that would warrant them to be treated any differently? They're theme's with special functionality built into the theme that utilize CORE code to do as such which was written specifically for those purposes, whether in a theme or a plugin.

      Patches are always welcome ;)

I think a lot of us that are developing some 'specialized' themes would be more then happy to devote some time and energy to helping get this right. I think both sides have valid points and the concern seems to mostly stem from placing the themes in the regular repo. We all agree that new specialized themes are only a good thing for WP and are a reason that 3.1+ is so powerful.

I think it would be relatively easy to modify the theme-check plugin to support specialized themes. There are only a few 'required' elements would have to be removed or modified.

Anyways, if the theme team does decide or start a discussion of the requirements I think a lot of us would gladly help out to set up the infrastructure to support it.
