Michael,

I think Sam was responding to a couple posts that have been made in
the bbPress forum where there is evidence of IIS not sending out
password emails.

In that last thread, user rslater mentioned that email IS sent from
the 'Post Notification 1.3" plugin, but not from bbPress for normal
passwords or password resets.  So, maybe finding the difference
between the way mail is prepared for bb_mail vs the way it is sent in
that plugin will help point to a solution.

I have a friend that can use IIS 5.1 (Windows XP) and IIS 6.0 (Windows
Server 2003) and has the same problem on both machines.  The SMTP
connection is dropped with a 501 error being logged.    He tried the
plugin that sambauers posted (which replicates the enhancements that
were checked into trunk) but it had no effect on mail being sent from
bbPress.
