Comment:

 I get the feeling that doing this will throw all sorts of PHP warnings and
 notices in other places about undefined variables in the object.

 I'd rather not introduce a bunch of type checking in those places. The fix
 for those plugins is fairly trivial, so I think we have to pass on this
 one.
