 Relatedly,

 Mark Jaquith just patched WordPress to show the error that the plugin
 generates: [#WP4580].  That might make things a bit more friendly for
 developers.

 It's not too complicated and not too difficult to secure (forcing me to
 eat my earlier words :) ).
