 Well, I tried a few things.

 including within a function doesn't do it.

 I started toying with using the output buffering functions to check the
 content, but this probably relies on errors reporting to the screen or
 some sort of "return" value in each plugin, so not ideal.

 Perhaps the solution is just to use the workaround.
