 Can you give an example of where this method works and the current method
 does not?

 The problem is that bbPress allows you to define a custom location for
 your plugins and templates (instead of putting them in my-plugins/ and my-
 templates/).  See bb-settings.php and look for BBPLUGINDIR and BBTHEMEDIR.
 If you put them outside of BBPATH, this method will not work.

 It may be that there's no good way to write this function and that a
 better method will have to be used (e.g. requiring the installer to define
 the URL of their custom location in addition to its path).
